This isn't a rant at the people who read these types of magazines, because to say that *everyone* who reads a certain magazine is "shallow" would be far too judgemental.

As usual it's a rant at society, focusing on the magazines that are now becoming increasingly common, which directly promote and reflect values of selfishness and materialism.

They hail celebrities as something special - when they are normal people, just with money who appear on a box now and again.
Capitalism needs things like celebs for the "normal" people to aim for... celebrities have wealth, luxury, beauty and the lifestyle everyone is told to want. When actually what they have is unachievable for anyone else -- unless they too become a celebrity.

These magazines focus on weight loss ALL the time - for god's sake, people are insecure enough trying to live up to the celebrity life, they don't need continual weight loss fads thrown at them too. One moment they're saying how nice a celebrity looks, then they'll be circling "blemishes" which are actually human nature and not blemishes at all. Is it such a surprise that these people aren't perfect?! They're normal people!!

Whether they admit it or not, they perpetuate the image that women should be slim, covered head to toe in makeup, and be perfect looking. Hence the Barbie.

To me these magazines are another form of distracting people from reality, somehow making them think that spending money to look "good", and surrounding themselves with the latest possessions, will make them happy.

Just another rant from me, feel free to ignore ;) x

thanks for a favourite on mine - this isn't to return the favour this is amazing - i noticed it was based on reveal - the colours gave it away

hmmm.... reasons to hate this sort of magazine

it preys on the unconfidence of people - (10 top slimming tips...how to tell if you're beautiful...etc....)

you said it best - "women if you don't like this you are an ugly failure" read it or you aren't gonna get slim, you aren't gonna be like we want you to think you can be, we want you to buy into us

the poor consumer is led to buy this shite as the powers in marketing have cleverly made sure they think they NEED it

and of course my favourite section is usually emblazoned on the front:

10 ways to tell if your man is a cheat
10 celebrity hair disasters
10 top diets for the slimmer summer

love the barcode "GET A LIFE" (of course - inspired by me - you should have used mine!)

you've done a really good job on this - submitting it to adbusters?

i love it! Very true..... as u can tell i don't diet.... and the celebs i like i like coz they are good at what they do.... Like Matt redman and Phatfish ( I've seen them in concert last weekend! :D) and then i don't worship their feet

Anyway.. classy and cool as usual

( remember this is someone who has only ever had Animals of farthing wood and Computing mags when i was ickle )

(oh i am in love with this radio station! should really listen to british based ones though )

and that means what to me....?

Yay thanks, it's nice to see when people really understand what I'm blabbering on about hehe :)
You've noticed all the little details too :):)

I wanted to fit more on it but there was no room, I was wanted to rant a bit more but restrained myself, but it seems the exact message got across anyway :w00t!:

Thanks for another fav, and yeah I'll definitely e-mail it to ya for adbusters!

That's fantastic. Strangely enough I was actually thinking about doing something like this last night. There was this ad constantly on ITV3 all last night "EXCLUSIVE: Liz Hurley talks about her struggle to keep her bikini figure at 40" - and I thought... 'Struggle? Fucking struggle? A young family supporting two kids on minimum wage, working all the hours God gives in ununionised Mcjobs, trying to put the kids through school while paying extortionate rent, council tax and living on shit cheap food... now thats a fucking struggle. Liz Hurley's never wanted for anything in her life... except maybe to know who the father of her child is*'

/rant

*And the fact that I am aware of that story is a testament to power of fucking celebrity gossip.

Anyway, like I said, I love this +fav
