In a nutshell straight edge is a commitment against the consumption of mind-altering substances (alcohol, cigarettes, illegal drugs, caffiene.. you get the idea!)

The reason for this is to keep a clean and clear mind, allowing you to live your life freely, having fun in a state that is not artifically-induced. It's a debatable issue for most people and I understand, but for me I like to be free of what I see as manipulating poisons in society, which simply blur the reality of being alive. Why should good times be due to the chemicals running in your bloodstream - why not have fun in reality?
